Water Polo Science Update

Here's the deal, I have found some more and recent research on Water Polo plus I have made contact with one of the leading authorities on Water Polo research (hopefully I will be able to pick his brain a bit).  So, with that being said I have taken down my previous post on field players and will have another version up soon with some newer information included in it.

Water Polo Science: part I (intro)

This is going to be a very exciting series of posts for me.  For those of you who don't know, I have a real passion for Water Polo.  This was my main competitive sport through high school and University, plus I have coached and referred at various levels.

Water_polo_powerplay Some of my playing highlights include a Gold medal Junior National Championship, international matches as part of a Western Canadian Youth Team and many years playing in the highest league in Canada, which today is called the Canadian Water Polo League.  That may sound pretty good but even at my best I was a far cry from the level of athletes involved in the Senior National Team.  While I mention the Canadian Sr. National Team, I must say I am so excited about them qualifying for the 2008 Olympics plus my girlfriend is from Hungary so I know her family will be watching! A little story about my girlfriend; when we first starting dating she was telling her brother that I play Water Polo, his reply ... "are you sure he knows what he is doing!"

Enough about myself, this series of posts will all be about the science of Water Polo and how it applies to training.  I will discuss actual research about Water Polo.  Now, there is not much of it out there and if you do a PubMed search you will get a whopping 68 peer reviewed research articles.  Compare that to 1494 articles for Basketball and 2916 for soccer!

If you have something specific about Water Polo training you would like me to discuss, then please leave a comment.

Fats are good for you ...

Fats are good for you and eating fat DOES NOT make you fat!

Saturated fat is not the bad guy of the fat world, trans fats are.

Omega-3 fats, aka fish oil ... do I need to say anymore?  Here is a previous post on fish oil.

Below are links to articles on fats.  My sister in-law motivated me to educate her about fats last summer and why they are healthy for you ... or are they???

Most of the below articles are written by Dr.'s who specialize in nutrition.\

PS  I am working on some more videos, particularly strength training for the Water Polo athlete among others.  These should be coming up in the next couple of weeks.

Realizing Your Dreams

I just watched this video lecture and I highly recommend it.  It is all about realizing your dreams.  Now, my blog is all about physical training, nutrition and health and is really aimed at coaches and athletes but the information presented is so important and universal whether you are in sports, school, work ... it doesn't matter.

Please take time to watch and listen.

Good or Bad: How to Choose Healthy Foods

Recently I did a nutrition seminar to a group of Swedish high school basketball athletes.  The seminar is all about how to choose healthy foods.  It gives tips on how you can determine whether a food is a good or bad choice.   It is not rocket science and is really some basic skills that everyone should have.

Below are the key points covered:Eggs Apple_2Chicken

  • Can you pronounce it?
  • Do you know what it is?
  • Packaged Foods vs whole foods
  • Trans Fats
  • White Devils
  • Eating the Rainbow
  • Where is the good food hiding?
  • Restaurants
