This is going to be a very exciting series of posts for me. For those of you who don't know, I have a real passion for Water Polo. This was my main competitive sport through high school and University, plus I have coached and referred at various levels.
Some of my playing highlights include a Gold medal Junior National Championship, international matches as part of a Western Canadian Youth Team and many years playing in the highest league in Canada, which today is called the Canadian Water Polo League. That may sound pretty good but even at my best I was a far cry from the level of athletes involved in the Senior National Team. While I mention the Canadian Sr. National Team, I must say I am so excited about them qualifying for the 2008 Olympics plus my girlfriend is from Hungary so I know her family will be watching!
A little story about my girlfriend; when we first starting dating she was telling her brother that I play Water Polo, his reply ... "are you sure he knows what he is doing!"
Enough about myself, this series of posts will all be about the science of Water Polo and how it applies to training. I will discuss actual research about Water Polo. Now, there is not much of it out there and if you do a PubMed search you will get a whopping 68 peer reviewed research articles. Compare that to 1494 articles for Basketball and 2916 for soccer!
If you have something specific about Water Polo training you would like me to discuss, then please leave a comment.
Be Well,
Mike Reid
